Concept Mapping

Our first major concept maps are being constructed to help teachers and students understand the connections and relationships between climate & oceanography. These maps are also guiding the design of a web interface that will allow students to "journey" through the Earth - Sun System, down to Earth's surface, and finally explore the small scale processes in the ocean.

Read more about our approach, view an evaluation of concept mapping software options, and find out what scientists think about concept mapping in "Mapping the Oceans" - Helping Students Make Connections.

The consensus maps, shown above, are the result of our first meeting with scientists in December 2005. Click images for larger views.

The following map is the culmination of the initial maps above, and highlights the three distinct views - Earth-Sun System, Earth, and Close-up, that will appear on the web interface.

The map above has been further detailed with a concept map for each view. Below is the preliminary map for the Earth-Sun System view.
